At the citrus plantation base in Binchuan County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province, black agricultural mulch film is spread beneath the citrus trees across the rolling hills. Under the sunlight, the film concentrates heat around the roots, promoting citrus growth. Zhang Limin, the base manager, shared with reporters that thanks to mulch film technology, the ripening period of citrus has been advanced by 15–20 days. The fruits are sweeter and more uniformly colored, with a yield increase of over 300 kilograms per mu, significantly boosting economic returns. "Based on the growth needs of citrus, we opted for black weed-suppressing mulch film, which not only retains heat and moisture but also inhibits weed growth, reducing pesticide usage. The citrus produced is green and highly popular in the market," he explained.
Binchuan County is a major production area for specialty fruits in southern China. In recent years, the region has leveraged advancements in mulch film technology to enhance the quality and efficiency of specialty crop cultivation. Tailored mulch film products have been developed through collaboration between agricultural departments and research institutions, addressing the growth characteristics of different crops such as citrus, grapes, and pomegranates. Examples include light-transmitting film specifically for grape cultivation and reflective film for pomegranate cultivation, achieving a "one film for one field, one solution for one crop" approach. Additionally, technical personnel have been organized to provide on-site guidance to farmers on mulch film installation and daily maintenance.
Data shows that the mulch film coverage area for specialty crops in Binchuan County has now reached 280,000 mu, accounting for 75% of the total cultivated area, helping farmers increase their income by 1,500–2,000 yuan per mu. The upgraded application of mulch film technology has not only enhanced the market competitiveness of specialty crops but has also injected strong momentum into rural revitalization.
